ABOUT ME
MY STORY
Sarah Lopez is a Polish, Mexican-American, self- developed fiber artist. She began her artistic journey knitting scarves to feel a connection to her grandmothers who used different plant and animal fibers to make clothes for their families. Sarah developed a curiosity for how yarn was made, and in 2020, she learned the art of dying and spinning wool. Equipped with a mountain of handmade yarn and a desire to design striking clothing that fit curvy bodies, Sarah experimented with the construction of garments and created a line of completely handmade dresses, skirts, and tops.
These hand-crafted outfits sat untouched for years, and Sarah decided it was time to repurpose the beloved textiles. Fueled with curiosity, Sarah meticulously unraveled hundreds of hours of work in order to deconstruct her handmade clothing. She cut up the yarn and glued it to a canvas her mom had given her. This experimentation presented the illusion of brush strokes and just like that, fiber painting was born!
Sarah’s evocative work revolutionizes the ancient art of textile creation into a sensational, contemporary experience that invites viewers to contemplate the power of transformation. Her fiber paintings explore themes of identity, mental health, and healing. Her fiber art reveals the vast beauty and possibility of natural fibers like wool. Sarah is a visionary creator who is on a mission to infuse the world with wonder, one textured fiber painting at a time.
